Social sustainability is an often-overlooked and difficult-to-define pillar of sustainability. It largely concerns wellbeing and quality of life, and in the context of fisheries it relates to their interaction within society. This broad area encompasses many different aspects, ranging from crew welfare to thriving local communities to food security, amongst other wider societal benefits. These subjects are a core focus of the KFO and its members who are a valued part of their local communities, in Donegal and beyond. Woven into the heritage of our island nation, fishing is core to the social and cultural identity of our coastal community members.

Each KFO member and their family business is part of the fabric of the community in which they live and work.
