Good Science

We support the science that underpins effective and sustainable fisheries management.

The KFO has a long history of contributing to science dating back to the 1980’s when we promoted the value of industry knowledge and the benefits of more involvement of the industry in scientific data collection and stock assessment. Working closely with renowned fisheries scientist, John Molloy of the Marine Institute, KFO members identified areas where they could contribute to data collection to improve the basis for fisheries management. This involved making their vessels available to undertake scientific surveys and contributing to initiatives such as self-sampling and tagging of pelagic species.

Under Sean O’Donoghue’s leadership, the KFO’s commitment to science continued to develop, advocating for the establishment of the Irish Fisheries Science Research Partnership (IFSRP) between science and industry in July 2008. In 2022, the KFO hired a full-time fisheries scientist to ensure that its members remain at the forefront of contributing to science.
