Sustainability Focus
Sustainability
Our KFO members rely on the long-term sustainable management of natural resources, so the environmental sustainability of these ecosystems is critical. Equally important are the economic and social sustainability of the fishing industry itself. The Irish Seafood sector has a low carbon footprint, relative to land-based food production, and it also provides a healthy and nutrient-dense food source. Aligning the three pillars of sustainability is central to our fisheries and requires close collaboration between and among the industry, scientists, policy makers and managers. The KFO is a strong advocate for this collaborative approach and actively contributes a number of stakeholder organisations and committees.

Sustainability Initiatives
Our members are involved in the BIM backed Fishery Improvement Projects (FIPs), which demonstrate Ireland’s commitment to achieving and maintaining sustainable fisheries. FIPs are a science-based approach to making continual improvements in the sustainability of specific fisheries and are a globally recognised means of assessing fisheries and identifying actions to improve the management and sustainability of these fisheries. We are involved in FIPS for a number of whitefish species, albacore tuna and brown crab. Our members are also part of BIM’s Responsibly Sourced Seafood (RSS) scheme, which addresses target requirements of Certified Raw Material Sourcing and Sustainability Initiatives as required by Bord Bia’s Origin Green, the national food and drink Sustainability Charter.
