Genetic Stock Identification
The stock identification of horse mackerel has been a long-standing issue as the initial stock
identification was not supported by scientific evidence, however there was no basis for improving it. Since 2015 the industry has been supporting the development of genetic stock identification methods for horse mackerel, which utilise the advances made in the herring stock identification projects. The latest results indicated that the current stock definitions do not align with biological populations and require revision. In 2024 the research was presented to the ICES Benchmark workshop on horse mackerel and boarfish stocks (WKBHMB) and informed the basis of the new horse mackerel assessments.
