Michael Callaghan Pacelli

Edward Farrell

Chief Scientific & Sustainability Officer

2022 – Present

BIO:

Ed graduated University College Dublin in 2015 with a BSc in Zoology and went on to a pursue his interest in fisheries by completing his PhD in Marine Fisheries Ecology at UCD in 2010. His association with the KFO started shortly after he started working on a KFO-funded project on boarfish biology and fisheries through a Marine Institute Research Fellowship. This was followed by a Government of Ireland Postdoctoral Fellowship on the genetic stock identification of boarfish, which led to further research projects with the KFO, Marine Institute and other Irish and European industry organisations and fisheries institutes on herring and horse mackerel genetic stock identification.

Ed left academia in 2020 as a Senior Research Fellow and initially worked as a consultant before joining the KFO full-time in 2022 as Chief Scientific and Sustainability Officer. Ed is a member of several ICES working groups, including HAWG and WGWIDE, and maintains a strong collaboration with many academic research groups. This connection between academia, fisheries institutes and the industry is fundamental to ensuring that fisheries management is supported by robust applied science.
